A Healthy Pregnancy

A healthy pregnancy depends on lifestyle choices and habits that start before conception and go through your pregnancy. Planning ahead and getting ready for pregnancy includes:

  • Eating healthy
  • Attaining a recommended body weight
  • Exercising
  • Stopping smoking
  • Eliminating alcohol
  • Getting adequate rest and sleep
  • Taking folic acid and multivitamins

We recommend that you meet with your health-care provider before trying to get pregnant to attain a pre-pregnancy check-up and to be sure your vaccines are up to date. Once you are pregnant, you’ll want to continue those good habits to ensure the healthiest pregnancy possible.

Meeting with your health-care providers on a regular basis will be important during each trimester of pregnancy. You may have already had a preconception medical checkup, but if you are not yet pregnant, consider scheduling time with your provider. You will also want to ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date and review your family health history. Be sure to discuss health conditions and treatments that you, your partner or family members have experienced.
